Head Coach Edwin ‘Mr Z’ Zarowin 1962 – 1984

“Mr Z” was an aspiring football coach when he was asked to fill in for the ailing Phil Weiss in the Spring of 1962. With the passing of Coach Weiss, Z was appointed head coach that Fall.

He coached the boys track & field and cross country teams from 1962 to 1984. His teams won 15 PSAL City Championships. He coached two Triple Crown teams (1969-70 and 1978-79) and three Championship of America Relays at Penn: the Distance Medley Relay in 1968 (10:09) and 1980 (10:05.6), and 1980 4×800 (7:44.43). His athlete, Estaban Diaz was named the High School Athlete of the meet at Penn Relays in 1980.

After Tech: Z went on to very successful 30 year stint as head coach at Hunter College where he produced 3 National Champions, 23 All Americans and was named CUNYAC Coach of the Year 33 times. He was elected to the Hunter College Hall of Fame in 1996.
